Hair Loss
What is it?
Hair loss is a natural process in which the hair on the scalp or other parts of the body falls out more rapidly than usual. This can be a temporary condition or a sign of more serious health issues. Depending on the cause, hair loss can be partial or complete.
Causes of Hair Loss
- Heredity. The most common cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia (baldness), which is inherited.
- Hormonal changes. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy, after childbirth, menopause, or due to thyroid diseases, can cause hair loss.
- Stress. Chronic stress or intense emotional experiences can lead to temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium.
- Nutritional deficiencies. A lack of vitamins (especially B vitamins, vitamin D, iron, and zinc) can weaken the hair and lead to hair loss.
- Illnesses. Conditions like anemia, autoimmune diseases, skin infections on the scalp, or dermatological problems can cause hair loss.
- Medications and treatments. Some medications, including chemotherapy drugs, acne treatments, and antidepressants, can cause temporary hair loss.
- Improper hair care. Frequent use of harsh chemical treatments, thermal styling tools (such as straighteners or blow dryers), or tight hairstyles can damage hair and lead to hair loss.
When to See a Doctor?
- If hair loss occurs rapidly and in large amounts.
- If hair loss is accompanied by itching or inflammation of the scalp.
- If hair loss occurs in specific areas of the scalp, which could be a sign of alopecia areata.
- If hair loss is associated with other symptoms, such as fatigue, pain, or skin changes.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Examination and tests. A doctor will examine the hair and scalp and may recommend tests to determine the cause of hair loss.
- Trichoscopy. This is a method where a specialized device (trichoscope) is used to closely examine the hair and scalp for changes.
- Medications. Depending on the cause, the doctor may prescribe treatments such as minoxidil, hormonal medications, or vitamins.
- Surgical treatment. In cases of severe hair loss, such as androgenic alopecia, hair transplantation may be recommended.
- Dietary adjustments. It's important to balance the diet by including foods rich in vitamins and minerals to support hair health.
