Growth on the Eyelid

What is it?

A growth on the eyelid is an abnormal formation that appears on the skin of the eyelid and may be associated with various conditions or diseases. The growth can be either benign or malignant, and its appearance can be caused by factors such as infections, inflammatory processes, or tumor formations.

Causes of Growths on the Eyelid

• Stye. An inflammation that occurs in the eyelid glands, often accompanied by a painful growth filled with pus.
• Meibomian Cyst. A benign growth caused by blockage of the meibomian glands, which may appear as a small painless bump on the eyelid.
• Papillomas. These benign tumors can occur on the eyelid skin due to a viral infection, such as human papillomavirus (HPV).
• Chalazion. Inflammation of the meibomian gland that often results in the formation of a firm, painless growth on the eyelid.
• Basal Cell Carcinoma. A malignant tumor that can develop on the eyelid skin, appearing as thickening or an ulcer.
• Keratosis. Excessive skin cell growth can lead to the formation of growths that may be hard and brown in color.

When Should You See a Doctor?

• If the growth on the eyelid increases in size.
• If the growth is painful or accompanied by inflammation.
• If the growth changes color or shape.
• If you experience discomfort or problems with your eyes.
• If the growth does not resolve over time.

Diagnosis and Treatment

• Examination by a Doctor. A specialist will examine the growth to assess its type and determine if further diagnostics are needed.
• Biopsy. A biopsy may be performed to determine the nature of the growth.
• Surgical Removal. In some cases, growths may need to be surgically removed, especially if they cause discomfort or are malignant.
• Treatment for Eye Conditions. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may be prescribed to address infections or inflammation.
