Excitability
What is it?
Excitability is the ability of the body or its parts to respond to stimuli, leading to an active state. This is a physiological phenomenon in which the nervous system actively responds to various external or internal stimuli. Excitability can be a normal reaction to stimuli, but it can also be a sign of certain diseases.
Possible Causes
- Physical excitation. Excitability can be caused by physical stimuli such as pain, heat, cold, or other extreme conditions.
- Psychological excitation. Stress, anxiety, and strong emotions can lead to increased excitability of the nervous system.
- Hormonal changes. Changes in hormone levels can influence the body's excitability.
- Neurological disorders. Some conditions like epilepsy can impair normal excitability of the nervous system.
Symptoms
- Frequent mood swings.
- Increased response to stimuli.
- Unjustified anxiety or irritability.
- Difficulty concentrating.
- Physical agitation or restlessness.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Consulting a doctor. Diagnosis requires consultation with a neurologist or psychotherapist to identify possible conditions.
- Psychological therapy. In case of psychological disorders, psychotherapy or consultation with a psychologist may be recommended.
- Medication. Depending on the cause of excitability, sedatives, antidepressants, or neuroleptics may be prescribed.
