Pus Discharge from the Vagina: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is Pus Discharge from the Vagina?
Pus discharge from the vagina is a thick, yellow or greenish secretion that occurs when there is an infection in the vaginal area. The discharge is often accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or pain. Pus discharge can be a sign of bacterial infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or other gynecological issues. It is important to identify the underlying cause to receive proper treatment.
Causes of Pus Discharge from the Vagina
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). This is a severe bacterial infection of the reproductive organs that can cause pus discharge, along with pain, fever, and abnormal bleeding.
- Gonorrhea. This sexually transmitted infection (STI) is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae and often leads to thick, yellowish or greenish vaginal discharge.
- Chlamydia. Another STI, chlamydia can cause abnormal vaginal discharge that may include pus, along with pain during urination and pelvic discomfort.
- Bacterial Vaginosis. This condition, caused by an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria, can lead to thick, foul-smelling discharge, sometimes with a pus-like consistency.
- Cervicitis. Inflammation of the cervix, often caused by an infection, can lead to pus discharge from the vagina, along with pain and irregular bleeding.
Symptoms of Pus Discharge from the Vagina
- Yellow or Greenish Pus Discharge. The discharge is often thick and can vary in color, usually being yellow or green, and has a foul odor.
- Pelvic Pain. Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis is common, especially in cases of PID or other infections.
- Burning Sensation. A burning sensation during urination or intercourse may accompany pus discharge.
- Itching and Irritation. Itching in the vaginal area is often present, especially with bacterial infections or STIs.
- Abnormal Bleeding. Irregular vaginal bleeding, such as spotting between periods or after sex, can occur along with pus discharge.
Treatment for Pus Discharge from the Vagina
- Antibiotic Medications. For bacterial infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, or PID, antibiotics are prescribed to eliminate the infection.
- Antifungal Medications. If a yeast infection is the cause of the discharge, antifungal treatments such as suppositories or oral medications may be recommended.
- Good Hygiene. Maintaining proper genital hygiene is important for preventing the spread of infections. Avoid douching, which can disrupt the vaginal balance.
- Partner Treatment. For sexually transmitted infections, both partners should be treated to prevent reinfection.
- Follow-Up Care. It's important to follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure that the infection has cleared completely and to monitor for any complications.
