Deformation of the Phalanges of the Hands

What is it?

Deformation of the phalanges of the hands refers to the change in the normal shape or structure of the bones in the fingers (phalanges), which can occur due to various reasons, including injuries, diseases, or congenital anomalies. Such changes can lead to difficulty in finger movement, pain, and limited functionality of the hand.

Causes of Phalangeal Deformation

  • Injuries. Fractures, dislocations, or sprains can lead to deformation of the phalanges, especially if not treated properly.
  • Congenital Anomalies. Some people may be born with abnormal phalanges, such as underdevelopment or abnormal bone shape in the fingers.
  • Osteoarthritis. Chronic joint inflammation can lead to changes in the phalanges' shape and reduced mobility.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis. This disease, associated with joint inflammation, can cause damage to the phalanges and finger deformation.
  • Gout. Elevated uric acid levels in the blood can cause joint inflammation, which can also lead to deformation of the phalanges.
  • Poliomyelitis. A viral disease that can damage the nervous system, also leading to deformation of the hand fingers.

Symptoms of Phalangeal Deformation

  • Changes in finger shape (e.g., bending, enlargement, or reduction in size).
  • Pain in the fingers or joints.
  • Restricted movement of the fingers and difficulty in bending or straightening them.
  • Redness and swelling of the joints.
  • Sensation of numbness or tingling in the fingers.

When to See a Doctor?

  • If you notice changes in the shape of the phalanges or fingers.
  • If there is pain or discomfort in the finger area.
  • If you experience difficulty moving your fingers or limited mobility.
  • If you have redness, swelling, or other signs of inflammation.
  • If symptoms persist or worsen over time.

Diagnosis and Treatment

  • Examination and Medical History. The doctor will examine your fingers and take a medical history to determine the possible causes of deformation.
  • X-rays. An X-ray may be used to diagnose fractures or changes in the bones of the phalanges.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). MRI can be used to detect damage to soft tissues and joints, as well as changes in bones.
  • Laboratory Tests. The doctor may order blood tests to assess levels of inflammation or other disease markers (e.g., uric acid levels in gout).
  • Conservative Treatment. This includes medications (anti-inflammatory drugs, pain relievers) and physiotherapy to improve mobility.
  • Surgical Intervention. In some cases, surgery may be required to correct the deformation if conservative treatment does not work.
