Neck Pressure
What is it?
Neck pressure refers to a feeling of tightness, tension, or discomfort in the neck area. It may be associated with muscle spasms, spinal issues, vascular problems, or other factors.
Causes of Neck Pressure
- Muscle strain. Excessive tension in the neck muscles caused by stress, poor posture, or physical activity.
- Cervical osteochondrosis. Degenerative changes in the cervical spine that can cause pain, tightness, and limited mobility.
- Herniated disc. Pressure on nerve endings in the neck can lead to sensations of pressure and pain.
- Vascular issues. Narrowing of blood vessels or circulatory disorders, such as vertebral artery syndrome.
- Swollen lymph nodes. Lymphadenitis can be accompanied by swelling and pressure in the neck.
- Thyroid problems. An enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) can cause compression in the neck area.
- Injuries. Damage to the cervical spine or muscles can result in pain and a sensation of pressure.
When to see a doctor?
- If neck pressure is accompanied by severe pain or dizziness.
- If symptoms persist for several days or worsen.
- If numbness, weakness in the arms, or headache occurs.
- If pressure is accompanied by swollen lymph nodes or difficulty breathing.
- If the pressure started after a neck or head injury.
Diagnosis and treatment
- Medical examination. A doctor will perform an evaluation to identify potential causes of neck pressure.
- Diagnostic tests. MRI, X-ray, or ultrasound may be prescribed to assess the condition of the neck and circulation.
- Medication. Anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medications can help alleviate symptoms.
- Physiotherapy. Massage, exercises, or manual therapy may help improve muscle and spine conditions.
- Surgical intervention. In rare cases, surgery may be required, such as for a herniated disc.
