Tower Skull

Description:

A tower skull (also known as "towering skull" or "tower skull deformity") refers to an abnormal shape of the skull, often resulting from craniosynostosis. This is a condition where the bones in a baby’s skull fuse prematurely, leading to a deformity in head shape. The most common type is when the coronal suture fuses early, causing the skull to develop a high, tower-like shape.

Common Causes:

  • Premature fusion of the skull sutures (craniosynostosis).
  • Genetic mutations or syndromes (such as Crouzon syndrome, Apert syndrome, or Pfeiffer syndrome).
  • Environmental factors affecting skull development in utero.

Treatment for tower skull typically involves surgery to correct the skull's shape. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to ensure normal brain development and improve the appearance of the head. Surgery is most effective when performed in infancy, before the child’s brain has fully developed.
