High Sugar Levels in Urine: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is high sugar in urine?
High sugar in urine, or glucosuria, is a condition where the level of glucose in the urine exceeds normal levels. This can be a sign of various diseases, including diabetes, and can also occur due to stress or other physiological conditions. Normally, the kidneys filter glucose and prevent it from entering the urine. However, when blood sugar levels are too high, the kidneys may not be able to filter it effectively.
Causes of high sugar in urine
- Diabetes. The most common cause of glucosuria. In diabetes, blood sugar levels can be excessively high, leading to its excretion in the urine.
- Stress. Temporary high sugar levels in urine may occur due to strong stress, which activates hormones that influence blood sugar levels.
- Hormonal disorders. Diseases of the thyroid, adrenal glands, or other hormonal disorders can cause elevated blood sugar levels, which in turn can lead to sugar in the urine.
- Kidney dysfunction. When the kidneys are not functioning properly, glucose may not be effectively filtered from the blood.
- Pregnancy. Some women may experience temporary glucosuria during pregnancy due to changes in the body.
Symptoms
- Frequent urination. Excess sugar in urine can increase the volume of urine produced.
- Excessive thirst. High sugar levels in urine can cause a feeling of thirst and dry mouth.
- Fatigue. Excess sugar in the body can lead to feelings of fatigue and weakness.
- Unexplained weight loss. In some cases, high sugar in the urine may be accompanied by weight loss despite normal or increased appetite.
Treatment
- Blood sugar control. The main treatment is normalizing blood sugar levels. This may involve insulin or glucose-lowering medications.
- Dietary changes. It is recommended to limit carbohydrate and sugar intake to control glucose levels in the body.
- Physical activity. Regular physical activity helps lower blood sugar levels and prevent excessive sugar accumulation.
- Medical assistance. If diabetes or other diseases are suspected, it is necessary to see a doctor for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
