%Prolapse of Hemorrhoidal Nodes: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is hemorrhoidal node prolapse?
Hemorrhoidal node prolapse is a condition where the enlarged veins in the rectum protrude beyond the anal canal. This can occur during defecation or in the later stages of the condition.
Causes of hemorrhoidal node prolapse
- Increased pressure in the rectal area. Straining during defecation can cause hemorrhoidal nodes to prolapse.
- Chronic constipation. Frequent constipation causes straining, which increases the risk of hemorrhoidal prolapse.
- Pregnancy. During pregnancy, the enlarged uterus exerts pressure on the rectum, which may contribute to prolapse.
- Excess weight. Excess weight increases the pressure on the rectal veins, potentially leading to prolapse.
- Physical activity. Lifting heavy weights and other physical activities can increase intra-abdominal pressure, affecting the hemorrhoidal nodes.
Symptoms of hemorrhoidal node prolapse
- Pain in the anal area. A feeling of pain or discomfort in the anal area, especially during defecation.
- Bleeding. The appearance of blood on toilet paper or in the stool may indicate damage to the hemorrhoidal nodes.
- Protrusion of nodes. The nodes may protrude during defecation, but then return to the anal canal on their own or with gentle assistance.
- Swelling and inflammation. The appearance of the nodes may change, becoming swollen, red, and painful.
Treatment of hemorrhoidal node prolapse
- Conservative treatment. This includes using anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving creams and suppositories, as well as lifestyle changes (regular physical activity and a healthy diet).
- Surgical intervention. If conservative treatments are ineffective, surgery may be recommended to remove the hemorrhoidal nodes.
- Latex band ligation. This is a minimally invasive procedure where a latex ring is placed around the base of the hemorrhoidal node, causing it to die.
- Sclerotherapy. A special solution is injected into the hemorrhoidal node, which causes it to shrink and eventually disappear.
