Discharge with Unpleasant Odor
What is it?
Discharge with an unpleasant odor may be a sign of various diseases, both infectious and non-infectious. This symptom is often accompanied by other discomforts such as itching, burning, or pain, and requires medical attention.
Causes of Discharge with Unpleasant Odor
- Bacterial infections. For example, bacterial vaginosis in women or urethritis in men may cause discharge with a sour or rotten smell.
- Fungal infections. Candidiasis (thrush) can cause discharge with a sour odor and a characteristic curd-like consistency.
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis may cause discharge with an unpleasant odor, often accompanied by pain and itching.
- Urinary tract infection. Infections in the urinary tract can lead to discharge with the smell of ammonia or rotten eggs.
- Metabolic disorders. Some endocrine disorders, such as diabetes, may cause changes in the composition of discharge, resulting in an unpleasant odor.
- Foreign body presence. If a foreign body is present in the reproductive tract, such as a forgotten tampon, it can cause discharge with an unpleasant odor.
- Poor hygiene. Failure to maintain hygiene may lead to the accumulation of sweat and bacteria, causing an unpleasant odor in the discharge.
When to See a Doctor?
- If discharge is accompanied by painful sensations during urination or sexual intercourse.
- If the odor of the discharge is unusual or particularly strong.
- If additional symptoms such as itching, redness, or swelling appear.
- If discharge is accompanied by a fever or general deterioration of health.
- If the discharge has an unusual color (e.g., green, yellow, or brown).
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Examination and medical history. The doctor will perform an examination and identify possible causes of the unpleasant odor and discharge.
- Laboratory tests. Urine analysis, swabs from the urethra or vagina, and bacteriological studies can help identify infections.
- Ultrasound examination. Ultrasound may be recommended to detect hidden inflammatory processes and other abnormalities.
- Antibiotics and antifungal medications. Depending on the cause, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics or antifungal drugs to treat infections.
- Pain relievers. Pain relievers may be recommended to alleviate discomfort.
