Secretion of Mucus from the Eyes
What is it?
The secretion of mucus from the eyes is the process in which a viscous, usually clear liquid, often with a whitish or yellowish tint, is released from the eyes. This can be a symptom of various eye diseases or systemic infections in the body.
Causes
- Conjunctivitis. Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye (conjunctiva), often caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants. This condition typically results in mucus secretion, which can be clear or cloudy.
- Allergic rhinitis. Allergy to pollen, dust, pet dander, or other irritants can cause mucus secretion from the eyes, accompanied by itching and redness.
- Dry eyes. Insufficient lubrication of the eyes can lead to mucus secretion, especially at night or in dry air conditions.
- Blepharitis. Inflammation of the eyelids, often associated with infections or dysfunction of the sebaceous glands, can result in mucus secretion and crusting at the corners of the eyes.
- Foreign bodies. The presence of a foreign object in the eye can cause irritation and mucus secretion as a response to inflammation.
- Nasal pathology. Conditions like sinusitis or rhinitis can affect mucus secretion from the eyes through the nasolacrimal ducts.
Symptoms
- Frequent or abundant mucus secretion from the eyes.
- Itching, burning, or irritation in the eyes.
- Redness of the eyes and eyelids.
- Feeling of a foreign body in the eye.
- Dryness or the sensation of sand in the eyes.
- Swelling of the eyelids.
Diagnosis
- Medical examination. The doctor will examine the eyes to check for inflammation or infection.
- Tests. A swab from the eyes may be taken to identify bacteria or viruses.
- Allergy tests. If an allergic cause is suspected, allergy tests may be performed.
- Examination of nasal passages. If the issue is related to nasal diseases, an ENT consultation may be necessary.
Treatment
- Antibiotics. If mucus secretion is associated with a bacterial infection, the doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointments.
- Antiviral medications. For viral infections, antiviral treatments may be prescribed.
- Antihistamines. For allergic conjunctivitis, antihistamines are used to reduce inflammation and itching.
- Moisturizing eye drops. For dry eyes, moisturizing drops may be recommended to relieve symptoms.
- Hygienic procedures. Regular eye washing and removal of mucus or crusts is recommended to prevent infection.
