Pus Discharge from a Fistula
What is it?
A fistula is an abnormal channel that connects an internal organ or cavity to the surface of the body or another organ. Pus discharge from a fistula indicates an infection or inflammatory process requiring prompt medical attention.
Causes
- Chronic infections. Long-standing inflammatory conditions such as osteomyelitis or tuberculosis.
- Abscess rupture. The bursting of an abscess can lead to fistula formation.
- Postoperative complications. Improper wound healing after surgery.
- Crohn’s disease. A chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
- Periodontal diseases. Fistulas may form in the gum area.
Symptoms
- Purulent discharge from the fistula.
- Redness and swelling around the fistula.
- Pain near the fistula, worsened by pressure.
- Foul-smelling discharge.
- Fever (in cases of acute inflammation).
Diagnosis
- Fistulography. X-ray imaging with contrast dye to evaluate the fistula tract.
- Bacteriological analysis. Identifies the causative pathogen.
- Ultrasound of soft tissues. Assesses the extent of the inflammatory process.
- MRI or CT scan. Provides detailed imaging for complex fistulas.
Treatment
- Surgical removal. Removal of the fistula tract and drainage of the area.
- Antibiotic therapy. Targets bacterial infections.
- Topical treatment. Use of antiseptics and sterile dressings.
- Physiotherapy. Promotes faster healing (e.g., laser therapy).
- Prevention. Timely treatment of infections and good hygiene practices.
