%Pus in Stool: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is Pus in Stool?
Pus in stool refers to the presence of white, yellow, or greenish discharge mixed with feces. This condition often indicates inflammation or infection in the digestive tract. The presence of pus in stool can be a sign of various underlying medical conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), infections, or abscesses in the intestines. Immediate medical evaluation is recommended if this symptom occurs.
Causes of Pus in Stool
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Conditions such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can cause inflammation and the formation of ulcers, leading to pus in the stool.
- Bacterial Infections. Pathogens like Salmonella, Shigella, or Clostridioides difficile can infect the intestines and cause severe inflammation with pus production.
- Intestinal Abscess. Localized infections or abscesses in the intestinal walls may result in pus discharge mixed with stool.
- Fistulas. Abnormal connections between the intestine and other organs, such as the bladder or anus, can lead to the leakage of pus into the stool.
- Parasites. Certain parasitic infections, such as amoebiasis, can cause intestinal damage and pus in the stool.
Symptoms
- Pus in Stool. Visible white or yellow streaks or clumps of pus mixed with feces.
- Diarrhea. Frequent, loose stools may accompany the presence of pus, especially in cases of infection.
- Abdominal Pain. Cramping or discomfort in the abdomen may occur due to intestinal inflammation.
- Fever. Infections causing pus in stool may be associated with fever and chills.
- Blood in Stool. In severe cases, blood may also be present along with pus in the stool.
Treatment Methods
- Antibiotics. Prescribed to treat bacterial infections causing pus in stool.
- Anti-inflammatory Medications. Used for managing IBD and reducing intestinal inflammation.
- Hydration. Drinking fluids or receiving intravenous hydration is essential to prevent dehydration, especially in cases of diarrhea.
- Dietary Adjustments. A specialized diet may be recommended to reduce irritation and support digestive health.
- Surgical Intervention. In severe cases, such as intestinal abscesses or fistulas, surgery may be necessary to address the root cause.
