Discomfort when Biting
What is it?
Discomfort when biting refers to pain, unpleasant sensations, or sensitivity in the teeth and jaw area that occur when biting food or other objects. This symptom may be related to dental problems, gum issues, or other oral conditions.
Causes of Discomfort when Biting
- Cavities. Tooth decay and enamel damage can cause pain when pressure is applied to the tooth.
- Problems with Fillings. If a filling is damaged or does not fit properly, it may cause pain when biting food.
- Pulpitis. Inflammation of the nerves inside the tooth can lead to pain, especially when chewing or biting food.
- Periodontitis. Inflammation of the tissue around the tooth root can cause pain when pressure is applied to the tooth.
- Cracks or Chips in Teeth. Microcracks or visible damage to teeth can lead to painful sensations when biting.
- Malocclusion. An incorrect bite can lead to uneven pressure on the teeth and cause discomfort when biting.
- Gingivitis. Gum inflammation can lead to pain and discomfort when chewing or biting food.
- Dental Prosthesis Issues. Improperly fitted dental prosthetics or crowns can cause pain and discomfort when biting.
Symptoms
- Pain or sensitivity when biting food.
- Discomfort when pressing on teeth.
- Increased pain when eating hot or cold food.
- Unpleasant sensations that may persist even after stopping chewing.
- Swelling or inflammation of the gums around the affected tooth.
When to See a Doctor?
- If the pain does not subside within a few days.
- If pain is accompanied by swelling of the gums or facial area.
- If you experience severe pain or tooth sensitivity, especially when eating hot or cold food.
- If the pain becomes intense or is accompanied by fever.
- If you have cracks or chips in your teeth.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Medical Examination. A dentist will examine your teeth and gums to identify possible causes of pain when biting.
- X-ray. An X-ray may be taken to detect hidden damage or cavities in the teeth.
- Filling. If pain is caused by cavities or a damaged filling, the dentist may perform a filling procedure.
- Treatment of Pulpitis or Periodontitis. The dentist may recommend treatments to address nerve inflammation or inflammation around the tooth root.
- Malocclusion Correction. In some cases, correction of the bite may be necessary to alleviate discomfort when biting.
- Dental Prosthetics and Crowns. If teeth are damaged or poorly fitted dental prosthetics are the cause, replacement or adjustment of dental prosthetics may be suggested.
