Pressing Pain

What is it?

Pressing pain is a type of discomfort characterized by a sensation of pressure or squeezing in a specific area of the body. It can be associated with various conditions, including cardiovascular, neurological, or musculoskeletal disorders.

Causes of Pressing Pain

  • Cardiovascular diseases. For example, angina or a heart attack, which often presents with pressing chest pain.
  • Hypertension. High blood pressure can lead to a pressing headache.
  • Muscle tension. Overstrain of muscles, especially in the neck or back, may cause pressure and discomfort.
  • Neurological issues. Conditions like migraines or intracranial pressure can result in pressing headaches.
  • Respiratory conditions. Lung or pleural inflammation may cause pressing chest pain.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux. Pressure in the stomach or chest area can be related to acid reflux.
  • Psycho-emotional stress. High levels of stress and anxiety can provoke tension and pressing pain.

When to see a doctor?

  • If pressing pain occurs suddenly and is accompanied by shortness of breath, dizziness, or loss of consciousness.
  • If the pain lasts for several hours or does not subside after taking painkillers.
  • If the pain worsens with physical activity or is accompanied by sweating.
  • If there is a suspicion of a heart attack or another serious condition.
  • If the pain is accompanied by other symptoms, such as fever or vomiting.

Diagnosis and treatment

  • Medical examination. A doctor will assess the symptoms, conduct an examination, and order necessary tests.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG). Helps detect heart problems, such as ischemia or a heart attack.
  • Laboratory tests. Blood tests may help identify inflammation or cardiovascular issues.
  • Medications. Painkillers, antihypertensive drugs, or muscle relaxants may be prescribed depending on the cause of the pain.
  • Physical therapy. For muscle tension, massage or therapeutic exercises may be recommended.
  • Psychotherapy. Psychological or psychotherapeutic support may be needed for stress or anxiety-related conditions.
