Joint Pain: Overview
Description:
Joint pain is a common condition that can affect any of the joints in the body, such as the knees, hips, shoulders, or elbows. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including injury, inflammation, and chronic conditions such as arthritis.
Causes:
- Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease causing cartilage breakdown.
- Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the joints.
- Joint injuries, such as sprains, strains, fractures, or dislocations.
- Gout, caused by uric acid buildup in the joints, leading to inflammation and pain.
- Tendinitis, inflammation of the tendons surrounding the joints.
- Infections or autoimmune diseases affecting the joints.
Treatment:
- Rest and ice to reduce swelling and pain.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief.
- Physical therapy to strengthen muscles and improve joint mobility.
- Corticosteroid injections for inflammation control in severe cases.
- Surgical intervention, such as joint replacement, for advanced cases.
