High Body Temperature
What is it?
High body temperature refers to a condition where a person's body temperature exceeds normal levels (usually above 38°C). It can be a response of the body to infections, inflammation, trauma, or other diseases. Elevated temperature is a natural defense mechanism of the body against pathogenic microorganisms and inflammatory processes.
Causes of High Body Temperature
- Infectious diseases. Colds, flu, sore throat, pneumonia, coronavirus, and other infections often cause a rise in body temperature.
- Inflammatory processes. Diseases such as arthritis, colitis, or appendicitis can cause elevated temperature.
- Trauma. Physical injuries, especially with inflammation or hematomas, can lead to increased temperature.
- Oncological diseases. Some types of cancer may cause prolonged high body temperature.
- Allergic reactions. In some cases, allergies can lead to a rise in body temperature.
- Medication use. Some medications can cause an increase in temperature as a side effect.
- Overheating of the body. Prolonged exposure to the sun or hot environments can lead to overheating and a rise in body temperature.
When to see a doctor?
- If the body temperature exceeds 39°C and lasts for a long time.
- If high temperature is accompanied by severe pain, seizures, or difficulty breathing.
- If the temperature does not decrease after using antipyretic medications.
- If high temperature is accompanied by symptoms of intoxication, such as nausea, vomiting, or weakness.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Examination and tests. To identify the cause of high temperature, the doctor may prescribe a general blood test, urine test, and other studies.
- Antipyretic medications. The doctor may prescribe medications to lower body temperature (paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc.).
- Antibiotics. If the high temperature is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed.
- Treating the underlying disease. Treating the primary cause of the elevated temperature is key to the patient's recovery.
