Creaking
What is it?
Creaking is a sharp, loud sound that occurs when hard surfaces rub against each other. It can happen when moving joints, such as during walking or teeth grinding (bruxism), or when using various machines or equipment.
Causes
- Mechanical causes. Creaking may occur when two hard objects rub against each other, such as poor lubrication in machinery or lack of lubrication in bearings.
- Joint problems. Joint creaking may happen with arthritis, osteoarthritis, or other diseases when the cartilage wears down and bones start rubbing against each other.
- Bruxism. People who grind their teeth at night due to stress or other reasons may experience this sound.
- Wear and tear of materials. Creaking can be the result of worn-out materials, such as old doors, furniture, or vehicles.
Symptoms
- Noisy sounds occurring during movement or friction.
- Discomfort when moving or using objects.
- Pain or inflammation in joints or mechanisms.
Diagnosis
- Medical examination. A doctor may examine the joints to determine if creaking is caused by arthritis or another condition.
- X-ray. An X-ray may be performed to detect joint damage or bone wear.
- Mechanism assessment. A technical check or diagnostic of equipment may be done to identify the cause of creaking in machinery.
Treatment
- Equipment maintenance. Regular lubrication and servicing of equipment can prevent creaking in machinery.
- Medication. Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications can be prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints.
- Physical therapy. Special exercises can help improve joint mobility and reduce creaking.
- Bruxism correction. If teeth grinding is an issue, a dentist may recommend mouth guards or other devices to protect the teeth.
