Hanging foot
What is it?
A hanging foot is a condition in which the patient is unable to lift the foot, leading to it hanging down while walking. This is associated with damage to the nerves that control the muscles responsible for foot movement. It often occurs due to muscle dysfunction, injuries, or neurological conditions affecting the nerves.
Possible causes
- Nerve damage. For example, damage to the peroneal nerve can cause a hanging foot.
- Injuries. Fractures or dislocations in the ankle joint or leg injuries can interfere with foot function.
- Neurological disorders. Conditions such as stroke or multiple sclerosis can affect the foot muscles, leading to weakness.
- Muscle weakness. Weakness in the foot muscles due to illness, injury, or nerve dysfunction can lead to a hanging foot.
Symptoms
- Inability to lift the foot while walking.
- Difficulty stepping and the need to lift the foot higher than usual to avoid dragging it on the ground.
- Weakness in the leg muscles.
- Sensation loss or pain in the foot.
Diagnosis and treatment
- Consultation with a neurologist. A doctor should be consulted to identify the affected nerves or muscles causing the hanging foot.
- Medication. Depending on the cause, medications may be prescribed to improve nerve conduction or reduce inflammation.
- Physical therapy. Physiotherapy treatments, such as electrical stimulation or massage, can help improve foot function.
- Surgical intervention. In cases of nerve damage or serious injuries, surgery may be required to restore foot function.
