Hand Tremors: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What are Hand Tremors?
Hand tremors are involuntary, rhythmic shaking or trembling movements of the hands. These tremors can range from mild to severe and may affect both hands or just one. They can interfere with daily activities such as writing, eating, and holding objects.
Causes of Hand Tremors
- Parkinson’s Disease. One of the most common causes of hand tremors, particularly when the hands are at rest.
- Essential Tremor. A condition characterized by rhythmic tremors in the hands and other body parts, often worsened by movement.
- Multiple Sclerosis. This autoimmune disease can lead to tremors in the hands and other motor dysfunctions.
- Alcohol Withdrawal. Tremors in the hands may occur during alcohol withdrawal or as a result of chronic alcohol use.
Symptoms
- Rhythmic shaking or trembling of the hands.
- Tremors may be more noticeable when holding objects or when the hands are at rest.
- Difficulty with fine motor tasks such as writing or buttoning a shirt.
Treatment
- Medications. Beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, or Parkinson’s disease medications can be prescribed to reduce tremors.
- Physical Therapy. Occupational therapy can help individuals learn techniques to manage tremors and maintain their daily activities.
- Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). In severe cases, DBS may be considered to reduce tremors in the hands and other parts of the body.
