Prolonged Absence of Placenta Expulsion: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is Prolonged Absence of Placenta Expulsion?
Prolonged absence of placenta expulsion, also known as retained placenta, occurs when the placenta is not delivered within 30 minutes to an hour after the birth of the baby. This can lead to complications such as infection, hemorrhage, or uterine damage.
Causes of Prolonged Absence of Placenta Expulsion
- Placenta Accreta. In this condition, the placenta attaches too deeply into the uterine wall, making it difficult to expel naturally.
- Uterine Atony. If the uterus fails to contract properly after childbirth, it may not expel the placenta.
- Trauma or Injury. Injury to the uterus or cervix during delivery can interfere with the natural expulsion of the placenta.
- Multiple Pregnancy. Women carrying multiples may experience complications with placenta expulsion.
Symptoms
- Failure of the placenta to be expelled within the expected time frame after childbirth.
- Excessive bleeding or hemorrhage after birth.
- Signs of infection, such as fever or foul-smelling discharge.
Treatment
- Manual removal of the placenta by a healthcare provider, either through gentle traction or surgery if necessary.
- Use of medications to stimulate uterine contractions and facilitate placenta expulsion.
- Postpartum care to monitor for complications such as infection or continued bleeding.
