%Prolonged Gum Bleeding: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is Prolonged Gum Bleeding?
Prolonged gum bleeding refers to ongoing bleeding from the gums that lasts for more than a few minutes and may indicate underlying dental or medical issues. This condition is commonly linked to gum disease but can also be a sign of other health conditions.
Causes of Prolonged Gum Bleeding
- Gum Disease. Gingivitis and periodontitis are the most common causes of gum bleeding, resulting from plaque buildup and bacterial infection in the gums.
- Vitamin Deficiencies. Deficiencies in vitamins, particularly vitamin C (scurvy), can cause weakened blood vessels and gum bleeding.
- Medications. Blood thinners, anticoagulants, or medications like aspirin can increase the likelihood of bleeding gums.
- Blood Disorders. Conditions such as hemophilia or thrombocytopenia, which affect blood clotting, can cause prolonged gum bleeding.
- Other Causes. Hormonal changes during pregnancy or medical conditions like diabetes can contribute to gum bleeding.
Symptoms
- Bleeding gums, especially while brushing or flossing teeth.
- Swollen, red, or tender gums.
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth, indicating infection.
Treatment
- Improving oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly to prevent plaque buildup.
- Professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar that may be causing gum disease.
- In some cases, addressing underlying conditions like vitamin deficiencies or blood disorders may be necessary.
