What is Abdominal Rumbling?
Abdominal rumbling, also known as borborygmi, refers to the sounds produced by the movement of food, liquids, or gas through the intestines. These sounds can occur as a result of normal digestive processes but can sometimes indicate underlying issues when persistent or accompanied by other symptoms. While often associated with hunger, abdominal rumbling can also be linked to gastrointestinal disturbances or infections.
Causes of Abdominal Rumbling
- Hunger. One of the most common reasons for abdominal rumbling is hunger. When the stomach is empty, it starts to contract, which can create rumbling noises as it prepares for the intake of food.
- Digestion. As food moves through the stomach and intestines, the muscles of the digestive tract contract to process the food, which can cause rumbling or gurgling sounds. This process is normal and typically happens after eating.
- Excessive Gas. An increase in the amount of gas in the stomach and intestines can lead to louder rumbling sounds. This can happen due to factors like swallowing air, consuming carbonated beverages, or undigested food fermenting in the gut.
- Indigestion. Discomfort in the stomach or indigestion can cause rumbling noises, particularly when food moves through the stomach and intestines more slowly or irregularly.
- Food Intolerances. Conditions such as lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity can result in abnormal gas production, leading to rumbling sounds. Foods that are difficult to digest may exacerbate this issue.

- Bloating. Abdominal rumbling is often accompanied by a sensation of fullness or bloating in the stomach, especially when there is excess gas or digestive discomfort.
- Abdominal Pain. In some cases, abdominal rumbling may be associated with mild to moderate pain or discomfort, particularly if it is caused by indigestion or gastrointestinal disorders.
- Changes in Bowel Movements. If the rumbling is related to digestive issues like IBS or gastrointestinal infections, it may be accompanied by changes in bowel movements, such as diarrhea or constipation.
- Excessive Gas. Rumbling may also occur alongside an increase in gas, which can lead to burping or flatulence.
Treatment for Abdominal Rumbling
- Dietary Adjustments. Limiting foods that trigger excess gas or indigestion, such as carbonated drinks, greasy foods, and certain vegetables, can help reduce abdominal rumbling.
- Smaller, Frequent Meals. Eating smaller portions more frequently throughout the day can reduce the burden on your digestive system, helping to prevent excessive rumbling after meals.
- Probiotics. Probiotics may help restore balance to the gut flora and improve digestion, reducing rumbling and other digestive symptoms.
- Hydration. Drinking plenty of water helps with digestion and can reduce the occurrence of gas and bloating, which may contribute to abdominal rumbling.
- Avoiding Air Swallowing. Try to avoid activities that lead to swallowing excess air, such as chewing gum or drinking through a straw, as this can increase gas production and rumbling sounds.
- Stress Management. Stress can negatively impact digestion, leading to symptoms like rumbling and discomfort. Practices like yoga, deep breathing, and mindfulness may help alleviate stress and improve digestive function.
