Miscarriage (Fetal Death)
What is it?
Miscarriage refers to the loss of a fetus early in pregnancy. One of the signs of miscarriage may be fetal death, when the fetus stops developing and can no longer grow in the mother's womb. This can be caused by various factors such as genetic abnormalities, infections, or hormonal disorders.
Causes of Miscarriage and Fetal Death
- Genetic abnormalities. Chromosomal issues in the fetus can lead to improper development and miscarriage.
- Infectious diseases. Viruses and bacteria, such as herpes viruses, cytomegalovirus, or toxoplasmosis, can cause miscarriage and fetal death.
- Hormonal disorders. Hormonal imbalances, such as progesterone deficiencies, can lead to an inability to sustain pregnancy.
- Recent trauma. Physical injury, such as abdominal trauma, can affect pregnancy development.
- Autoimmune diseases. Conditions like antiphospholipid syndrome may increase the risk of miscarriage.
- Unhealthy lifestyle. Smoking, alcohol consumption, or drug use can increase the risk of miscarriage and fetal death.
When to See a Doctor?
- If you notice heavy bleeding or abdominal pain.
- If you suspect a miscarriage, especially during the first trimester.
- If you experience abnormal vaginal discharge.
- If you've had an infection or trauma that could affect the pregnancy.
- If you have chronic conditions that could impact the pregnancy.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Examination and tests. The doctor may order an ultrasound to assess the condition of the fetus and identify possible abnormalities, as well as laboratory tests to check for infections or hormonal imbalances.
- Treating infections. If an infection is diagnosed, antibiotics or antivirals may be prescribed.
- Hormonal therapy. In case of hormonal imbalances, treatment may be prescribed to regulate hormone levels and support pregnancy.
- Psychological support. Women who have experienced a miscarriage may need psychological support to overcome emotional challenges.
- Surgical intervention. In some cases, if the fetus has died, surgical intervention may be needed to remove the fetus and prevent infection.
