High Tone of Occipital Muscles
What is it?
High tone of the occipital muscles is a condition in which the muscles in the occipital area remain in constant tension, which can lead to pain and discomfort. This symptom is often associated with poor posture, stress, or muscle overload due to improper positioning of the head or neck.
Causes of High Tone of Occipital Muscles
- Poor posture. Prolonged periods in an improper position, such as sitting at a computer or reading in an uncomfortable posture, can lead to increased tension in the occipital muscles.
- Stress. Emotional tension and stress can cause spasms in muscles, including the occipital muscles, increasing their tone.
- Muscle overload. Intense physical exertion or improper head movements, especially during physical activity or sports, can lead to overstrain of the occipital muscles.
- Injuries. Bruises, strains, or other injuries to the cervical region can lead to increased tone of the occipital muscles as a protective response of the body.
- Osteochondrosis. Spine disorders such as osteochondrosis can cause muscle tension, including in the occipital muscles.
When to consult a doctor?
- If the tension in the occipital muscles causes chronic pain or headaches.
- If the tension is accompanied by restricted neck mobility or dizziness.
- If the pain does not subside after rest or simple relaxation methods.
- If there are injuries to the cervical spine.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Examination and patient interview. The doctor will perform an examination and ask questions to understand the possible causes of the increased muscle tone.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI may be recommended to diagnose spine or soft tissue conditions.
- Massage and physiotherapy. One method of treatment is massage and physiotherapy aimed at relaxing the occipital muscles.
- Use of painkillers and muscle relaxants. The doctor may prescribe medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or muscle relaxants.
- Posture correction. It is important to maintain proper posture and perform exercises to strengthen the back and neck muscles.
