Protruding Scapula: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is protruding scapula?
Protruding scapula is an abnormal position of the scapula, where it protrudes outward or deviates from its normal position. This can result from injury, developmental disorders, or diseases affecting the muscles, bones, and ligaments that support the scapula.
Causes of protruding scapula
- Muscle paralysis. Disorders in the function of muscles, such as paralysis of the serratus anterior muscle, can lead to protrusion of the scapula.
- Injury. Fractures or damage to the scapula or chest may cause the scapula to shift.
- Degenerative diseases. Conditions like osteoarthritis can weaken the ligaments and joints, contributing to the improper positioning of the scapula.
- Hip dysplasia. In some cases, abnormalities in the development of the hip joint can affect the position of the scapula.
- Thoracic kyphosis. Excessive curvature in the thoracic spine can change the normal position of the scapula.
Symptoms of protruding scapula
- Protruding scapula. The scapula is visible through the skin, especially when the person raises their arm or performs other movements.
- Pain. Often accompanied by pain in the back, neck, or shoulder, particularly with movement or load on the upper body.
- Limited mobility. Restricted movement in the shoulder joint and difficulty lifting the arm or performing other regular activities.
Treatment of protruding scapula
- Physical therapy. Strengthening the muscles of the back and shoulder girdle helps stabilize the scapula and restore its normal position.
- Surgical intervention. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the position of the scapula or restore damaged structures.
- Posture correction. Proper posture and improving postural habits can reduce scapular protrusion, especially in cases of posture disorders.
- Medication. Using anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and inflammation in the scapular region.
