Inflammation of the Tonsils

What is it?

Inflammation of the tonsils, or tonsillitis, is an inflammation that occurs in the tonsils, which are part of the immune system. The tonsils help the body fight infections but can become inflamed due to bacteria or viruses.

Possible Causes

• Bacterial infections. The most common cause of tonsillitis is streptococcal bacteria, which can cause inflammation of the tonsils.
• Viral infections. Viruses such as the cold or flu virus can also cause tonsil inflammation.
• Allergic reactions. Allergens like pollen can cause inflammation of the tonsils.
• Frequent colds. Repeated colds or upper respiratory infections can lead to chronic tonsil inflammation.

Symptoms

• Sore throat and pain when swallowing.
• Red or swollen tonsils.
• Redness or white spots on the tonsils.
• General cold symptoms such as fever, headache, and fatigue.

Diagnosis and Treatment

• Medical examination. To diagnose tonsillitis, a doctor may perform a throat examination and take samples, such as a throat culture, to detect bacteria.
• Antibiotics. If the inflammation is caused by bacteria, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
• Antiviral medications. In viral tonsillitis, antiviral medications may be prescribed.
• Gargles and pain relievers. Gargles and medications that reduce inflammation and pain in the throat may be used to relieve symptoms.
