%Gum Inflammation (Gingivitis)
What is it?
Gum inflammation (gingivitis) is a condition in which the gums become red, swollen, painful, and bleed easily. It is often associated with infections, such as bacteria in plaque, and is a common symptom of oral diseases.
Possible Causes
- Poor oral hygiene. The accumulation of plaque and bacteria on the gums is the leading cause of inflammation.
- Smoking. Smoking reduces the body’s ability to fight infections and worsens gum health.
- Hormonal changes. Pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause can increase gum sensitivity and contribute to inflammation.
- Vitamin deficiencies. A lack of vitamins C and D can weaken gum health.
- Diseases affecting immunity. Conditions like diabetes and others that weaken the immune system can increase the risk of gum inflammation.
Symptoms
- Red and swollen gums.
- Bleeding gums, especially when brushing teeth.
- Pain and sensitivity in the gums.
- Bad breath.
- Sensation of swelling in the gum area.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Consultation with a dentist. For diagnosis and appropriate treatment, you should see a dentist.
- Professional cleaning. Removal of plaque and tartar to prevent gum inflammation.
- Oral hygiene. Regular brushing and using dental floss to remove plaque.
- Anti-inflammatory treatments. Use of antiseptic solutions or ointments to treat inflamed gums.
- Diet and vitamins. Enriching your diet with vitamins C and D to support gum health.
