Sudden Hearing Loss
What is it?
Sudden hearing loss is a condition where a person experiences a rapid loss of hearing in one or both ears within a very short period, often within a few hours or even minutes. This can be related to various diseases and conditions, such as infections, nerve damage, or problems with blood circulation in the ear.
Possible causes
- Infections. Viral or bacterial infections, such as acute otitis media, can cause sudden hearing loss.
- Noise-induced damage. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can cause damage to the auditory system, leading to hearing loss.
- Circulatory issues. Disruption of blood circulation in the ear or brain can cause hearing loss.
- Trauma. Head or ear injuries can lead to nerve damage and hearing loss.
- Autoimmune diseases. In some cases, autoimmune diseases can cause damage to the auditory nerve.
Symptoms
- Sudden decrease or loss of hearing in one or both ears.
- Ringing or buzzing in the ears.
- Feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear.
- Dizziness or balance problems.
Diagnosis and treatment
- Consultation with a doctor. It is important to visit an otolaryngologist (ENT) for diagnosing the cause of hearing loss.
- Medication. Depending on the cause, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, or circulation-enhancing drugs may be prescribed.
- Physical therapy. In some cases, physical therapy may be necessary to restore hearing.
- Surgical intervention. If the auditory nerve or other structures in the ear are damaged, surgery may be required.
- Hearing aids. In cases of permanent hearing loss, hearing aids or cochlear implants may be recommended.
