Restless Movement
What is it?
Restless movement is a condition where a person feels the constant need to move, unable to stay in one position. It may manifest as fidgeting, leg shaking, or frequent interruptions in activity. This symptom can be associated with various conditions, such as restless leg syndrome, anxiety disorders, or neurological diseases.
Causes of Restless Movement
- Restless leg syndrome. This condition is characterized by a strong urge to move the legs, especially at rest, and is often accompanied by unpleasant sensations in the legs.
- Anxiety disorders. Stress, anxiety, and nervousness can trigger the need for constant movement to cope with inner tension.
- Neurological diseases. Conditions such as Parkinson's disease or other nervous system disorders can lead to restless movement and uncontrollable motions.
- Medications. Some medications, especially antipsychotics or antidepressants, can cause side effects such as restless movement.
- Hormonal changes. For example, thyroid hormone imbalances may affect the nervous system and cause anxiety and restlessness.
When to see a doctor?
- If you notice that constant restlessness is interfering with your daily life.
- If restless movement is accompanied by other symptoms such as insomnia, fatigue, or irritability.
- If this condition persists for an extended period or worsens.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Examination and medical history. The doctor will examine you and explore your symptoms, as well as investigate possible causes of restless movement.
- Laboratory tests. Tests may be ordered to rule out conditions such as iron deficiency or thyroid disorders.
- Medication. Depending on the cause of restless movement, medications may be prescribed to improve nerve function or alleviate anxiety.
- Psychotherapy. If anxiety is the cause, cognitive-behavioral therapy or other psychotherapeutic methods may be recommended.
