%Pressing Pain in the Chest
What is it?
Pressing pain in the chest is a sensation of pressure, squeezing, or heaviness in the chest area. This symptom can be related to various conditions, including cardiovascular disorders, respiratory diseases, or digestive tract problems.
Causes of Pressing Pain in the Chest
- Myocardial infarction. One of the most dangerous causes is a myocardial infarction, in which blood circulation in the heart muscle is impaired.
- Angina pectoris. This condition, associated with insufficient blood supply to the heart, can cause episodes of pain and pressure in the chest.
- Esophageal problems. For example, acid reflux or esophagitis, in which stomach acid irritates the esophageal lining, can cause chest pain.
- Pulmonary embolism. A clot blocking the pulmonary artery can lead to acute chest pain and shortness of breath.
- Pneumothorax. The sudden entry of air into the pleural cavity can cause chest pain and difficulty breathing.
- Intercostal neuralgia. Inflammation or damage to the nerves between the ribs can cause sharp chest pain, felt as pressure.
- Muscular and skeletal issues. Chest pain can be caused by injuries or strains to the intercostal muscles and cartilage.
When to See a Doctor?
- If chest pain is accompanied by difficulty breathing, dizziness, sweating, or weakness.
- If the chest pain is severe and does not subside after 10-15 minutes.
- If the pain radiates to the back, left arm, jaw, or neck.
- If the pain is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or rapid heartbeat.
- If the pain appeared after a chest injury.
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Medical examination. A thorough examination and assessment of symptoms will help the doctor determine the possible cause of the pain.
- ECG. Electrocardiography helps detect signs of myocardial infarction or other heart diseases.
- Chest X-ray. This method is used to diagnose lung diseases such as pneumothorax, pneumonia, or tumors.
- Chest CT scan. A CT scan provides a more accurate evaluation of the lungs and heart, detecting pulmonary embolism or other conditions.
- Blood tests. The doctor may order tests to assess platelet levels, inflammation markers, and other indicators.
- Treatment. Depending on the cause, treatment may include pain relievers, anti-anginal drugs, anticoagulants, or surgical intervention.
