Pain in the Lung

Description:

Pain in the lung area is often not caused by the lungs themselves but by the surrounding structures, such as the chest wall, pleura (lining of the lungs), or muscles. It can also be linked to issues with the ribs, heart, or upper abdomen. Lung-related pain may indicate a serious condition, such as an infection or inflammation.

Common Causes:

• Pleurisy (inflammation of the pleura).
• Pneumonia (lung infection).
• Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung).
• Collapsed lung (pneumothorax).
• Costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting ribs to the breastbone).
• Muscle strain in the chest or ribs.

If the pain is sharp, persistent, or associated with difficulty breathing, coughing, or fever, medical attention is essential to determine the cause and receive treatment.
