Pain when Swallowing
Description:
Pain when swallowing, also known as odynophagia, is usually caused by infections or inflammations in the throat. It can also occur as a result of acid reflux, irritation from food or drink, or injury to the esophagus. The pain may range from mild discomfort to severe, sharp pain.
Causes:
- Sore throat or pharyngitis
- Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Esophageal injuries or infections
Treatment:
To relieve pain when swallowing, gargling with warm salt water or taking over-the-counter pain relievers can help. If the pain persists, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics or other medications depending on the cause of the condition.
